When you are just about to complete your school, discovering new opportunities in your current job position or maybe facing an unemployment issue, you might be considering the right career path for yourself. The career path is considered as the growth an employee seeks in an organization. It represents various positions an employee follows when he/she grows in the organization.

Why is Finding the right Career Path Important?

This greatly depends on the way you define your career path. For some people, a professional career is seen as a destination where the goal is to accomplish some level of expertise or stature in the chosen field of work. The destination can lead to a role , a company, feeling of accomplishment and any other specific goals.

While others, take the career path as a journey where the goal is to explore different working experiences in various adjacent fields like working in companies or organizations within a big well known company, job types, different geographically located regions and other alternative aspects of your professional role.

The career path is creating milestones of opportunities for employees to achieve. It does not always mean upward mobility. Career path helps to increase the job responsibility but not necessarily job promotions. This kind of career advancement is known as the outward mobility.

It is also important to notify that the staff employees’ goals often do not align with the short term objectives of the organization. This is where the career path is established. The career path creates a long-term road map for the employees for their roles in the future ahead. This refers to the talent that should fit with the organization’s long term strategic goals and promoting every employee into a manageable position which does not always mean an attainable goal.

What are the Key Elements in Developing a Successful Career Path?

Firstly, create a career roadmap that shows what the prototypical career path looks like in terms of roles, positions and stages. It helps to visualize each position or role as a stage in a path. This kind of information becomes very useful when employees experience versatility in their career and move forward to different job roles in different parts of business to enhance their proficiency.

Secondly, build different position profiles that show distinctive job roles in the career path by highlighting their core competencies, knowledge and requirements. Next, the core competencies and behaviors must be differentiated considering the performance level of employees. Then, implement various training and development programs that prioritize different position profile characteristics and various career experiences the employees must adapt to as they move along the career path.  In the last, the organization must ensure the amount of resources allocated to the career path process are successfully implemented and working effectively.

In today’s diversified global environment, the career paths are not perceived as the vertical movement rather it is a metaphor of a person’s career path as a rock climbing wall. A successful career path is one that is multi faceted aligns with each step in the talent management cycle and therefore, must match a workforce to the company’s future state.
