ATM Network Connection Management Using Mobile Agents

Connection management in ATM networks can be possible through configuration management that also supports other functional areas of network management. Static configuration is the better way to establish PVC but it needs too much human intervention and consumes time because network administrator have to manually configure each intermediate system(IS) to setup the virtual connection.
This research paper also focuses on dynamic configuration of PVC in ATM networks and describes the algorithm for automatic permanent virtual connection establishment using mobile agents.
As in manual configuration the administrator have to access the intermediate system through telnet session or through SNMP sessions but mobile agents is initialized with the table containing the list of addresses for each intermediate system. The agent moves to the workstation and obtains the information about next and pervious devices of ATM systems. To move further, mobile agent should know for what type of traffic would pass through the PVC connection that mobile agent is going to establish it can be done by obtaining the index of traffic descriptor entry that matches the traffic type requirements specified by network manager. The mobile agent have to traverse through the ATM devices so first it will establish VPL (Virtual Path Link) for the workstation and which is ended  at local ATM switch , the VPL link establish between all ATM switches by cross connect table contains the VPI/VCI entries, each VPI/VCI is used to establish virtual channel between ATM switches.

To terminate the virtual link the entry in cross connect table is deleted and after that the entry in the link table is removed. These steps have to be followed to achieve the goal for establishing and destroying the PVC in public ATM networks.
